In this article we're covering negative keyphrases. Very simply, these are phrases which you don’t want your ads to show for.

Typically you want to add in negative keyphrases like:

  • Free
  • Sale
  • Cheap
  • Fake

If you’re selling anything you’re unlikely to get a sale from someone who is looking for something for free so there’s no point paying for those clicks, so we’d add ‘free’ to the list of negative keyphrases.

A great way to look for negative keyphrases is to go to the Keyphrases tab for a campaign or ad group and look at the ‘search terms’ tab. This shows you what people are searching for that is generating ad impressions and clicks. Look through the list and see if there’s anything which might not be relevant to your products and add it as a negative keyphrase.

Doing this can dramatically cut down on wasted clicks and can mean the difference between making a profit or making a loss.

We’d recommend you review your ads on a monthly basis to ensure you aren’t paying for unwanted clicks and to keep tweaking those ads.
